What's a token?
Tokens are pieces of words. For English, 1 token is about 4 characters or 0.75 words. See the Tokenizer tool for more details.
Which model should I use?
GPT-4o or GPT-4o mini are generally recommended. GPT-4o is better for complex tasks, GPT-4o mini is faster and cheaper for simpler ones. Experiment with them in Playground to see which suits you best.
How will I know how many tokens I've used each month?
Check your usage tracking dashboard to view your token usage during the current and past billing cycles.
How can I manage my spending?
You can set a monthly budget in your billing settings, and an email notification threshold. Regularly check your usage dashboard.
Is the ChatGPT API included in ChatGPT Plus, Teams, or Enterprise subscriptions?
No, OpenAI APIs are billed separately from ChatGPT Plus, Teams, and Enterprise subscriptions.
Does Playground usage count against my quota?
Yes, Playground usage is treated the same as regular API usage.
How is pricing calculated for Completions?
Chat completion requests are billed based on input and output tokens. See the detailed explanation on the pricing page.
How is pricing calculated for Fine-tuning?
Fine-tuning pricing has two components: training and usage. Training is billed based on training tokens (tokens in training data * number of epochs); usage is billed at usage rates.
Which models support vision capabilities and how is pricing calculated?
gpt-4o, gpt-4o-2024-08-06, gpt-4o-2024-05-13, gpt-4o-mini, gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18, gpt-4-2024-04-09, gpt-4-turbo, gpt-4-vision-preview, and gpt-4-1106-vision-preview support vision. Images are converted into tokens; the number depends on the model used.
