The Face Effect is an AI research project that explores the impact of facial features on judicial decisions regarding pre-trial release. It employs an algorithm to analyze mugshots and predict judge decisions, revealing that certain facial attributes, such as a 'gaunt, thin face,' can be more predictive of detention than a previous felony or even the type of crime. To understand the 'black box' of AI, a facial transformation tool was developed, allowing researchers to communicate with the AI by exaggerating features it noticed. This process led to the discovery of significant facial bias causing injustice. The project aims to help judges counter these biases and inform new policies to ensure less biased legal decisions.
