The Face Effect is a research initiative and AI tool developed by the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence at the Chicago Booth School of Business. It investigates the factors influencing a judge's decision to release or detain an individual, specifically focusing on the impact of mugshots. The project built an algorithm to analyze these decisions and discovered that facial features significantly explain judicial outcomes, accounting for 45% of the judge's decision. To understand what the AI was 'seeing', a facial transformation tool was created to communicate with the AI. This tool exaggerated features the algorithm noticed, revealing that a 'gaunt, thin face' was highly predictive of detention, even more so than a previous felony. The findings highlight significant facial bias causing injustice, and the project aims to help judges counter this bias and inform new policies for less biased decisions. It provides insights into how facial characteristics can be more impactful than the type of crime committed.
