The $8 million grant will be distributed among four leading academic institutions, each tasked with pioneering AI-driven solutions in a specific domain.[4] The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru will host TANUH, a center focused on developing scalable AI tools for the effective treatment of non-communicable diseases.[5][6] At the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, the Airawat Research Foundation will spearhead research into transforming urban governance through artificial intelligence.[4][5] IIT Madras's AI Centre of Excellence for Education is dedicated to creating solutions that enhance both learning and teaching outcomes.[5][6] Finally, ANNAM.AI at IIT Ropar will concentrate on creating data-driven solutions to improve agriculture and the welfare of farmers.[5][6] This coordinated national research mission aims to advance foundational research, promote responsible AI, and develop applied solutions for public benefit, contributing to the country's long-term development goals.[7]
Healthcare emerges as a central pillar of Google's AI-focused initiatives in India. Beyond the funding for the Centres of Excellence, the company announced a $400,000 grant to support the development of India-specific Health Foundation Models using its MedGemma framework.[8] This initiative will see collaborations with institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to build clinical models for applications such as dermatology and outpatient triaging.[8][9] Furthermore, Google is partnering with the National Health Authority (NHA) to convert millions of unstructured medical records into the standardized, machine-readable FHIR format.[10][7] This is expected to improve patient understanding of their own medical information, lessen the documentation burden on healthcare facilities, and enable more data-driven public health policies.[6] To improve accessibility, over 400,000 NHA-registered health facilities will also be listed on Google Maps and Search.[10][7]
Recognizing the vast linguistic landscape of India, Google is also making substantial investments to ensure AI advancements are inclusive. A $2 million founding contribution will establish the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay.[11][1] This hub, created in memory of the pioneering linguistics professor Pushpak Bhattacharyya, will focus on strengthening AI systems to serve India's diverse languages.[1] This commitment extends to the startup ecosystem, with grants of $50,000 each awarded to Gnani.AI and CoRover.AI to support their work on Indic-language voice and e-governance solutions.[6][7] IIT Bombay will receive an additional $50,000 grant to build an India-centric health database using Indic language documents.[7] Further supporting social impact, Google.org is providing $4.5 million to Wadhwani AI to develop multilingual AI applications for both health and agriculture, including a conversational AI assistant for frontline health workers and a new language model for farmers.[10]
In a move that connects technological advancement with environmental responsibility, Google is also addressing the energy footprint of its expanding AI operations. The company announced a partnership with ReNew Energy for a 150-megawatt solar project in Rajasthan.[10] Through this long-term agreement, Google will receive environmental attribute certificates to offset emissions within its value chain and encourage its suppliers to adopt clean energy.[10][6] This project builds upon previous collaborations that have already added significant wind and solar capacity to India's grid, contributing to the nation's renewable energy targets.[10][6]
