The buy-now-pay-later firm Klarna, which initially claimed its AI agent could do the work of 700 representatives, recently pivoted to reinvesting in human talent.[7] The company’s leadership noted that while AI could handle scale and speed, human assistance remained essential for complex, high-stakes interactions, eventually rebranding human support as a "VIP experience." This shift underscores a growing realization in the tech sector: organizations that use AI purely for cost-cutting through labor elimination often sacrifice their long-term competitiveness. The companies that are winning are those that invest in upskilling their workforce to work alongside AI, moving from a model of execution to one of orchestration.
Furthermore, the "skill-leveling" effect of AI suggests that poor implementation can inadvertently punish an organization’s most valuable assets—its experts. Research consistently shows that while AI significantly boosts the performance of novice workers, it provides minimal gains for top-tier performers and can even cause a slight decline in the quality of their output if they are forced to adhere to rigid, AI-driven workflows.[5] When companies reduce their workforce based on the assumption that AI has leveled the playing field, they often lose the "edge cases" expertise that only veteran human employees possess. Without a robust human-in-the-loop framework, there is no mechanism to catch the errors that occur when a task falls outside the AI’s "capability boundary."
