About
TAIAO is a New Zealand-based data science programme, funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment. Its core mission is to improve the accessibility and usability of environmental data for researchers, scientists, and the wider community. The programme develops novel machine learning methods specifically tailored for New Zealand's unique environmental context. A collaborative effort involving several universities and organizations, TAIAO co-designs its work with iwi, industry, and government to harness data science for preserving natural resources. It actively builds New Zealand’s environmental data science capabilities through workshops, undergraduate, and postgraduate research projects, and by integrating global advancements. The platform also offers resources to find and share datasets, notebooks, and software, fostering a vibrant community for discussion and collaboration. An example of its direct output is the Aotearoa Species Classifier, a publicly available AI app that helps identify approximately 11,000 species of New Zealand flora and fauna.
