In a landmark move set to significantly bolster India's digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence capabilities, Google has announced a monumental $15 billion investment to establish a state-of-the-art AI data center hub in Visakhapatnam, a major port city in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. This investment, to be rolled out over the next five years, represents Google's largest single financial commitment in India to date and will create the company's biggest AI hub anywhere in the world outside of the United States. The project is a cornerstone of a broader strategy to develop Visakhapatnam into a global technology and AI powerhouse, positioning the region at the forefront of the digital economy.
The formal announcement and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place at a ceremony in New Delhi, attended by top government officials and Google executives. This collaboration will focus on co-investing in new transmission lines, clean energy generation, and innovative energy storage systems to ensure the facility is powered sustainably and contributes to the resilience of India's electricity grid. Furthermore, to enhance global connectivity, the Visakhapatnam hub will serve as a new international subsea gateway.[1][8] Google plans to land its subsea cable infrastructure in the city, integrating it into its global network.[3] This will create a vital new digital backbone on India's eastern coast, complementing existing landing stations in Mumbai and Chennai and boosting data transmission speeds and resilience for users across the country and the wider Asia-Pacific region.[5][8]
