What are the system requirements?
Dictation uses Google's Speech Recognition engine. You need the Google Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, or Linux. It works in Chrome on Android, but a desktop browser is recommended. It's not compatible with iPhone or iPad.
Does Dictation support my native language?
Dictation supports many languages including English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, and more. See the full list on the website.
How do I improve the accuracy of speech recognition?
Speech recognition works best in quiet environments. A dedicated headset can improve accuracy. Dictate longer phrases in a natural voice, pausing briefly before and after punctuation.
Can I publish my notes on the Internet, like a blog?
Dictation saves everything locally in your browser; no data is saved online unless you use the 'Publish' button to publish to a Github Gist with a secret URL.
Dictation is not working for me. What could be wrong?
Make sure you're using Google Chrome, your microphone is on, your computer is connected to the internet, and no other tabs are using speech recognition. The first time, allow microphone access.
How do I unblock my microphone to use Dictation again?
In the Chrome address bar, click the camera icon, select "Always allow https://dictation.io", or type chrome://settings/content/microphone and remove dictation.io from the Blocked list.
What is your privacy policy? Is my data safe?
Dictation stores data locally in your browser; only speech is sent to Google servers via Chrome over HTTPS for speech recognition. See the privacy policy for details.
