Spark Plug is a generative AI model designed and trained to transform classic literature into culturally responsive language that resonates with a Gen Z audience. It uses ethical data and youth culture to enhance the learning experience through increased engagement, content retention and rigor. The model is designed for students to create inclusive learning environments, for teachers to deepen subject matter understanding, and for businesses to craft authentic brand messaging and tailor employee learning experiences. It was trained using literature from the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights Movement to ensure diversity and inclusion.

Who created Spark Plug?
Spark Plug was created by the leaders of Tech Spark. Founder, author and educator, Tamar Huggins is a trailblazer for diversity, equity and inclusion in the edtech space and has pioneered the development of the Black tech ecosystem in Canada. Dr. Larry Davis, CTO, supports development through his mastery of artificial intelligence and data science. Timothy Jones and Reena Devani, Product and Curriculum, have over 30 combined years of experience as educators and curriculum developers.
What problem is Spark Plug solving?
The impact of the disruption to education caused by the pandemic has been the greatest in Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous communities throughout North America. To address the problem of the education disruption, we must acknowledge the challenges for the communities most impacted were present within education before the pandemic. Many students in the Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous or economically challenged communities were not performing in school at the same rate of success as their White peers. There is a need for innovation in education that is designed to address the challenges that existed before the pandemic and can be used as a strategy to deal with the impact associated with the disruption caused by the pandemic.
How does the Spark Plug model work?
We used diverse and ethical data to train a large language model to transform classic literature into culturally responsive language. We’ve essentially created the equitable version of Chat GPT, by using the rich literature of authors from the Harlem Renaissance and activists from the Civil Rights Movement. Spark Plug has it’s own unique voice that resonates with a Gen Z audience as it was crafted by our creator and her 13-year-old daughter. It was important that we created a model built on the foundation of a community that is often intentionally left out of the tech design process, and spoken through the vessel of a future leader.
How will the privacy of my child/student be handled?
Our platform is entirely cloud based. Our cloud providers, are PIPEDA and FERPA compliant.
