Flora Incognita is an AI-powered plant identification app that combines artificial intelligence with citizen science. It allows users to identify over 30,000 plant species by taking photos and provides extensive plant profiles with information on characteristics, protection status, and distribution. The app is cost- and ad-free, works offline, and allows users to save their plant findings, contributing to scientific research. It's a project of the Technische Universität Ilmenau and the Max-Planck-Institut für Biogeochemie.

Does the Flora Incognita App cost anything?
No. Flora Incognita is completely free and ad-free.
How does the Flora Incognita App work?
Simply tap on the large flower in the main menu to enter the photo mode of the app. Now take a photo of the plant to be identified and, if necessary, take further photos from other perspectives.
Which plants can be identified with Flora Incognita?
Currently, Flora Incognita can distinguish over 16,000 different vascular plants. This means wild herbs, trees, grasses and ferns are recognized, whereas mushrooms, lichens and most mosses cannot be identified.
Is the Flora Incognita App available in different languages?
Flora Incognita is available as a full German and English version. In addition, we currently offer over 30 other localizations, but some content is not in the respective language, but in English.
Do I need to create a profile to use the Flora Incognita App?
You don't need a profile to identify plants with the Flora Incognita App. If you don't want a profile, tap “Without profile” on the login page.
Why does the app request access to my location?
Flora Incognita is more than just a plant identification app. The goal of our research project is to map plants to research the change in biodiversity. This is only possible if we have the locations of all recorded plants.
Why does the app request access to the media storage?
If you want to take pictures with the Flora Incognita App or identify a plant photo from your device's memory, the app must be able to access the photos in the media storage.
Can I have plants identified if I don't have a mobile network?
You can take photos of the plants to be identified at any time even without an existing internet connection. The observation is saved in your observation list.
How can I save observations?
Each determination that you confirm with the green check mark at the top right is automatically saved in your profile and can be viewed at any time under “My observations”.
Where are my plant photos stored?
You have the option of having the images you take with Flora Incognita saved directly in your gallery. You can find this option in the settings.
How can I add more pictures to my observation?
To do this, tap on the round field in the lower left corner after the first photo. This will take you to a menu from which you can add further perspectives and notes on the find.
How can observations be deleted?
You can delete individual observations by swiping the relevant observation to the left in the observation list. It is not yet possible to delete multiple observations at once.
Can I edit observations later?
Yes, if a plant identification has been saved, you can change the plant name afterwards. Select the corresponding observation and tap on the pen to the right of the species name.
Can I have photos from my smartphone gallery identified?
Yes! Tap the gallery icon next to the camera when prompted to take the first photo. Now you can load images from your phone's photo storage into the app.
What can I do if, for example, the plant is not currently flowering but a flower picture is required?
If it is not possible to photograph a perspective required by the app, e.g. because the plant has no flowers or leaves, this perspective can be skipped.
