About
The a2 Collective represents the Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratories (AITC) for Aging Research program, funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). It is dedicated to helping Americans live longer, healthier lives through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies. The program earmarks $40M to fund promising AI-driven AgeTech projects that seek to improve care and health outcomes for older adults, including persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). Pilot awardees receive access to study sites, datasets, resources, mentorship, and are eligible for $10K in AWS credits and SBIR/STTR grant funding support. The Collective also hosts events and a national symposium to foster collaboration and share advancements in the field.

FAQs
What organizations are eligible to apply for a2 Pilot Awards?
Eligible institutions must have a Unique Entity ID (UEI) and include colleges, universities, medical/nursing schools, healthcare systems, for-profit corporations, and nonprofits in the U.S.
May I apply if I am not a U.S. citizen?
Yes, provided your visa/immigration status is acceptable and you are employed by a U.S. institution. Collaborations with foreign institutions are allowed with NIH foreign clearance.
What qualifications are required for the principal investigator (PI) and project team?
A PI can be any individual with necessary skills and resources. They must be affiliated with the U.S.-based prime applicant. MPIs are allowed. eRA Commons account is required for all PIs/MPIs.
Are individuals or projects that have received prior National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding eligible?
NIH policy prohibits overlapping support. Projects must not overlap with prior NIH or federal funding. Incremental enhancements to NIH SBIR/STTR-funded technologies are not eligible.
How much funding is available?
Each pilot project can request up to $200,000 in direct costs, expended within 12 months. Most funded projects do not exceed $100,000, but higher levels are considered with justification.
Does the grant award of up to $200,000 include indirect costs?
No, $200,000 is the ceiling for direct costs. Indirect costs are budgeted separately at your institution's federally negotiated F&A rate or a de minimis 10 percent.
What type of expenses are allowable?
Allowable expenses include personnel support, services, travel (to a2 National Symposium), equipment, research supplies, lab costs, participant compensation, and publication costs.
How will funds be provided?
Funds are provided on a reimbursement basis, with project teams invoicing for expenses incurred on a schedule set by their AITC (e.g., quarterly or monthly).
What is the application timeline and process?
Round 1 applications are due Jan 15, 2025. Round 2 (invite-only) due Mar 31, 2025. Final award notification expected Summer 2025, with projects starting Fall 2025.
Does the applicant need to decide which of the three AITCs to apply to before submitting an application?
Yes, applicants must indicate their preferred AITC and are encouraged to research AITCs to determine the best fit. Typically, only the chosen AITC considers the application.
Can an applicant apply to more than one AITC?
Yes. An applicant can propose multiple unique pilot projects by submitting separate applications. Simultaneous submission of overlapping projects to one or multiple AITCs is not permitted.
Who owns the intellectual property (IP) developed using AITC funds?
The AITC university may claim partial IP rights from substantial collaboration. Awardees should discuss IP division with the university's technology transfer office prior to collaboration.
