Phenaki is a pioneering AI model designed for generating realistic videos from textual prompts. A key innovation allows prompts to change over time, enabling the creation of dynamic, narrative-driven videos that can extend to multiple minutes in length. The model addresses challenges in video generation, such as high computational cost and limited high-quality text-video data, by introducing a causal model for learning video representation. This model compresses videos into small discrete tokens using causal attention, supporting variable-length videos. Text-to-video token generation is handled by a bidirectional masked transformer conditioned on pre-computed text tokens. Phenaki also leverages joint training on large image-text corpora and smaller video-text datasets, resulting in superior generalization. It is the first known model to generate arbitrary long videos based on a sequence of time-variable prompts or stories, outperforming existing per-frame baselines in spatio-temporal quality and token efficiency.
