What is "thin cloning"? Thin vs. thick clones
Thin cloning creates virtual databases that share data blocks for speed, based on Copy-on-Write (CoW). Thick cloning is a regular data copy (e.g., dump/restore, pg_basebackup).
Do I need ZFS on production servers?
No. ZFS is only required on Database Lab instances to enable thin provisioning. It is not needed on your production servers.
Why ZFS?
ZFS is an efficient filesystem with rich capabilities like CoW and transparent compression, easy installation, and a user-friendly CLI, making it ideal for dev/test environments.
How stable is ZFS?
Modern ZFS on Linux is very stable. Multi-terabyte Database Lab Engine instances run for months, handling high TPS and many clones with excellent performance.
What do I need to use Database Lab?
A dedicated machine (physical/virtual) for each instance, a disk partition for Postgres data, and recommended 20% free disk space. Modern Linux is supported.
