FAQs
Is non-stenographic recording legal?
Absolutely, non-stenographic depositions are permitted under Federal Rules of Civil Procedure 30(b)(3) since 1993, and most states have followed suit. Check Skribe's Admissibility page for specific state allowances.
What is Skribe?
Skribe is a software platform that empowers legal professionals to non-stenographically capture their own legal testimony. Attorneys can record and transcribe testimony without stenographers or videographers.
Why Skribe?
Skribe addresses the shortage and high cost of stenographers, offering a way to capture testimony and get video-synced rough transcripts. It provides video processing and clipping tools, plus professionally proofread transcripts for Live events, improving access to justice.
What can I expect during a Skribe event?
Participating in a Skribe event is like any other Zoom meeting, using your own Zoom app. No court reporter or videographer will be present. Skribe provides a certified notary 'Liaison' for your jurisdiction who swears in the witness and guides attorneys through the process of capturing testimony with software.
What do I get after the Skribe event?
Everyone who participates in a Skribe event gets a copy of the video and exhibits. Within hours, these materials are available. Others can purchase a copy of the rough transcript, video clipping tools, and a final transcript for an additional fee.
How accurate is the rough AI transcript? What about over-talk, spellings, or words that are inaudible?
Skribe’s rough AI transcript is an excellent reference tool for your video record, though it may have issues with uncommon names or grammar. Professionally proofread final transcripts are available within one week. The video record helps clarify any inaudible parts.
Does Skribe use generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) to create transcripts?
Skribe.ai does not use Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) for transcripts. It uses proven Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) technology for a rough draft, which is then proofread by professional transcriptionists within a week.
Does Skribe have generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) Capabilities?
Yes, Skribe uses a customized version of OpenAI’s GPT-4o for post-event analysis and answering questions. This chat-based Generative AI assistant provides accurate, high-quality responses focused on event details and links to media content, ensuring data security.
Does Skribe certify transcripts of depositions?
No, Skribe.ai focuses on certifying non-stenographic video records as the official deposition record. Professionally proofread transcripts are supplementary tools accompanying the official video record.
Can I be in the same room as the witness?
Yes, but Skribe is optimized for remote participation. If in the same room, place a computer in front of the witness with mic/speaker enabled, and a separate muted computer for the attorney. Speak clearly to avoid cross-talk.
Do I need any special equipment to join a Skribe call?
All you need is a computer with a webcam, microphone, speakers, and a strong internet connection (50 Mbps download, 5 Mbps upload recommended).
How are exhibits handled?
Exhibits are handled via the 'screen share' function. After the event, introduced exhibits are uploaded into an electronic folder, and the Liaison shares the link with all parties.
Do you have approval from the various state supreme courts and federal courts to take the depositions online without a stenographer?
Non-stenographic recording is permitted under federal (FRCP 30(b)(3)) and most state rules. A small minority of states require stipulations or court orders. Learn more on their Admissibility page or by emailing support@skribe.ai.
How do you handle not having a shorthand court reporter present?
All Skribe depositions are staffed by a certified notary 'Liaison' who swears in the witness, tracks exhibits, and acts as a neutral third party. A certificate of authenticity for the non-stenographic record is provided.
What’s the pricing structure?
Skribe has a usage-based pricing model, billing by the tenth of an hour (6-minute increments). Visit the Pricing page for more details.
